CCBF member Cathay Pacific Airways hopes that aviation will be a key feature of this December's COP15 meeting. The airline industry, through its trade body IATA, is committed to significant reductions in emissions as part of its goal of tackling climate change predicated on a four pillar approach - technology, operations, infrastructure and positive economic measures.
Specifically, airlines are committed to achieving carbon neutral growth from 2020 and a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2050, over a 2005 baseline.
Faced with the complexity of regional initiatives such as the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, Cathay Pacific has also been working hard with its industy colleagues to support the need for COP15 to recognise that aviation has to be part of a global sectoral approach. Quite simply, as a global industry, we believe that aviation needs a global solution, rather than a patchwork of regional approaches.
